Hypnosis - An altered state of consciousness
The fears, myths and mystery surrounding hypnosis are totally undeserved. In itself hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness that is regularly experienced by everyone. It is the dreamy state which precedes falling asleep or becoming fully awake. We experience this state when we are absorbed in reading a book, watching a film, listening to music, dancing, or daydreaming. A person experiencing hypnosis is neither fully awake nor asleep, but somewhere in between these two states, and is by no means under someone's power or control. Clients experience a state of deep relaxation of body and mind but are aware of what is being said to them at all times.
Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. In itself the hypnotic state is a very pleasant, relaxed state but nothing more than that. In this state the mind can become more receptive and responsive to positive suggestions and imagery which can be used to help treat a number of psychosomatic, psychological and physical problems. It is enhanced by a client's positive expectations and high motivation to achieve her goals.
Hypnosis can be used to elicit unconscious material, explore repressed emotions, access lost memories or identify the root causes of a problem. This is achieved through age regression. Regression therapy involves taking a person back, under hypnosis, to past events or memories in the person's life and involves addressing the unconscious causes of a problem. Regression is a powerful tool for releasing negative emotions and experiencing profound healing. However regression is not always necessary, there are other therapeutic techniques which can help heal without having to regress.
Hypnotherapy can help you with many things that you wish to achieve for yourself but you should always remember no-one can wave a magic wand over you. The therapist is only a guide helping you achieve what you want to achieve for yourself.
